Emily is happy with her life just as it is.
She has a career as a midwife that she loves . She enjoys living on her own as a single woman. But she’s also feels it’s time for a change and a spot of some sea air.
So when her best friend Rebecca asks whether she’d like to spend the summer cooking on a ‘puffer’ boat just off the Scottish coast, she jumps at the chance.
But she barely has time to get to grips with the galley before she finds herself with a lot on her plate.
Rebecca is heavily pregnant and is thrilled to have her friend on board doing most of the work. Then there’s Emily’s competitive and jealous kitchen assistant who thinks she should be head-cook, not Emily.
And there’s Alasdair, the handsome local doctor who Emily is desperately trying not to notice.
Because if she falls in love with him, as he appears to be falling for her, will she ever want her old life back again?

I first read this author some 15 years ago, her book Life Skills. Living near the Chesapeake Bay in (very) rural Virginia, I enjoyed the story of boating along the canals of the UK. Until I read Life Skills I'd not known there was a network of canals through England's countryside. A Summer at Sea is a return to a nautical theme--actually two this writer like to play with--food and hospitality. The heroine is happily meandering through her late youth, vaguely aware (because people constantly remind her) her biological clock is ticking. She is sure she prefers independence to babies unless she can find 'the right man.' One of the most charming aspects of Fforde' s romances is the concept that there is a right man.
Well once she meets him she has to decide to relinquish her freedom. That is the crux of the problem. And it adds a bit of depth to what otherwise might be a fluff beach read romance. Katie Fforde is not heavy reading and hooray for that. She does excel at crafting characters you come to feel as if you know know or would like to know better.

A Summer at Sea 9780099579328 Katie Fforde Books Reviews
I enjoyed this book because I felt that I could really enjoy having them as friends in my life. I was pleased with the way the relationships were handled and the consideration the characters showed for each other.
I don't usually read romances, but my dear friend Ruby was right when she recommended this one. I loved it. It was like being in Scotland again, attending a ceilidh, and walking through the heather. The characters and the story pulled me right along. Great fun!
Not my favorite Fforde romance; I thought some of Emily's midwifely attitudes a little odd and the obstacles to love contrived. I liked Emily the cook better than Emily the health practitioner. Still fans of Fforde's romances will probably enjoy. Best read on the beach....sipping something cold.
I am not sure why I didn't like this novel. I felt no sympathy for the main character and did not think she showed much good judgement and professionalism when it came to her job. The writing was choppy and it almost felt as though two ideas for plots had been forged into one book. Very disappointing g read for a holiday weekend.
Her books have become more and more formulaic in recent years. The reviews indicated this was a return to her previous good form but I cannot agree. I finished it but it was not worth the effort. I would suggest others only buy this one if it is a 'special" or daily deal.
Normally a fan but this was not my favourite Katie Fforde book. Emily came across as 30 years older than she was supposed to be and alternated between sickly sweet and being offended at the strangest things. The story meandered along with no great passion or purpose and at times I found myself flicking through pages just to get it finished.
I love reading love stories even though I am in my 50s, so daft characters and poor writing really don't cut it for me. I always have loved Fforde's novels, because she creates textured believable characters who live in interesting places and engage in very interesting professions and hobbies. This book is true to form, and I really loved it. It makes me want to go to Scotland too.
Now Katie, if I could have my wish, I would love it if you could write one about a 50-something woman (maybe a poet like me-?) who is very textured and nuanced, for all of us in my age group to enjoy.
