I do not care for this statistics textbook. If you are unfortunate enough to be using this book in conjunction with a professor who rambles about unrelated topics in class, you will see how poor a job the book does of equipping you to do problems on your own. (I have had one incidence of actually working a problem all the way through in lecture and am almost finished with the semester.) I have taken statistics classes in the past (two general classes, one psychology class) and maintained high grades, so I believe that the problem is not just with me. The chapters lack clear, easy to understand and follow examples worked from beginning to end. Along the same lines, the questions at the end of each chapter provide answers in the back for odd-numbered questions, BUT there are usually not multiples of the same kind of question, leaving the student without the option of working a similar problem, checking in the back of the book, and then moving on with confidence to the actual problem assigned as homework. I have spent most of the semester watching lectures on youtube to get the information I need.Product details

It was a good price. Statistics isn't my favorite concept.
This is one of the best textbooks I've ever read!(Not something I would typically say about a textbook.) The author has cleverly managed to explain statistical procedures in everyday language (and even included a sense of humor). Howell has demonstrated the ability to make what many would consider highly complex and uninteresting information seem relevant to the reader. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is unfamiliar with statistics or needs to further their understanding of these concepts. Also, includes references to excellent website resources that go along with the book!
I've been teaching statistics at the graduate and undergraduate level for over 20 years. David Howell's textbook is hands down the best textbook I've ever used for teaching undergraduate statistics courses. It has the ideal balance between technical details and basic material for undergraduates. There is enough detail that concepts are explained very well, but not so much that students get bogged down in details and can't focus on the logic of what they are learning. The textbook examples are very good and taken from published studies. And the website has additional material, datasets to download for lab assignments, and applets for 'seeing' statistical concepts in action. The current edition is edition 7. My only minor criticism is that I have uncovered a number of typos that I would have thought would have been corrected by a 7th edition. My guess is that these are due to updated material and there are not many. Despite this, the box is excellent!
I examined several textbooks before selecting Dr. David Howell's book. This book has all the features a professor needs to teach a comprehensive statistics course to students that are not mathematics and science majors. Moreover, the professor can easily organize his/her material by arranging/rearranging the chapters to fit the course objectives. Dr. Howell presents several alterative suggestions for the professor on how best to make this course adaptable for various conditions and situations. I heartedly recommend this textbook without reservation.
I downloaded this book on my kindle for intro. To statistics class. I dont overally like this book, the positive things are the chapters are short. And the author gets right to the point. However the wording of the author and the examples he gives are boring and dont feel relevant half the time to the problem. I would do the dowload content as i would not want to keep this book around that long.
I have been taking a statistics course for my specialist degree in Education Administration. I have read over 100 pages of this textbook and it is one of the most poorly written books I have ever read in almost 13 years taking college courses. I constantly am reflecting to my classmates how poorly organized the book is, how the explanations and figures in the book are vague and unclear, and how the author seems to mock you every five pages explaining how easy it really is. I am constantly going to the web to complete the labs for my class and looking at sources that seem to match the content, but explain it better. This book is NOT an introduction to statistics book. It is literally the Spanish II version of a Spanish I class and my current instructor has gone above and beyond to provide videos and supplements for this book to help students and it just isn't working. I think an instructor should be selective about this book. The book is written more on the doctorate research level, but does not flow well for those in education. I have literally wanted to throw this book in my fireplace several times, I can't wait for this class to be over.
This is a great textbook for learning stats focused on psychology and the other behavioral sciences. This particular book has a great conceptual flow, as compared to other books that order content differently, and is actually readable! When it comes to stats, not many are looking forward to reading a book on it; most don't expect to gain anything from straight reading a book on math. Many textbooks on math subjects can be overly tedious and so complex they are difficult to read and understand as a standalone source. However, this book was so readable and understandable. As far as reading text on math, (nerd alert) this was almost story like. I would absolutely recommend this book to people who want to learn stats on their own, as well as for teaching purposes.
