If your only knowledge of The First Wives Club is the movie, you owe it to yourself to check out the much better book on which it waas based. I would watch Bette Midler, Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn and Maggie Smith read a phone book, so I enjoyed their performances immensely, but the screenplay left out most of the best parts of the far more nuanced book. Unlike the movie versions, the book's characters are much more multi-faceted. And the secondary characters, like Brenda's decorate friend Duarte and Morty's second wife Shelby, are fully developed, rather than shtick-laden caricatures (although Bronson Pinchot and Sarah Jessica Parker are very entertaining).
In fact, after stumbling across the movie on TV, I had to re-read the book to remind myself of how satisfying it was. This is the best of all possible worlds - page-turning, engrossing and entertaining reading, but with characters and situations that are intelligently written and thought-provoking.
Loved the book, better than the movie, the characters were very well portrayed. You really had an opportunity to understand what drove those women to "not get mad, get even"!
The book was not "hilarious" but had a good story. About the only similarities with the movie was that there were 3 women, they were left by their husbands, and they did form the First Wives Club. That's about it -)
I realize it's my fault for not paying more attention to the description of the story. I had watched the movie more times then I can count and just believed the book would be the same. Didn't stop to realize the book had been out first, hence making the movie. I was looking to read a light and funny book. The characters were to some degree like in the movie and it's hard not to picture them that way when you are reading. But they were not the same type of friends like I'd expected. It was more dark and serious and a lot more swearing then I cared for. I usually sail through a great book. I only read a few pages at a time and would have to keep going back and re-reading to remind myself what had happened. I'm sure it's a good book for someone else. But if your going to read it thinking it's the movie but of course a lot longer with more details as is the case for most books then you may be disappointed. I read many books i.e "Twilight" "Drew/Lacy Peterson case" and the like and realize it's a bit different then movie but there is so much that doesn't go along in a light and silly way with this one. I will try reading it again with a fresh mind and perhaps I may appreciate it better the second time.
Hilarious book. Definitely dated terms used.
I really loved this book, I thought it was going to be more like the movie but it was kinda cool that it wasn't, it kept me wondering what's going to happen next.
This was an ok read. It was a book club book, otherwise I'm not sure I would have picked it up. It made for a very interesting discussion, so I would recommend it for a book club pick, but it did not make me want to read any of Olivia's others novels. If you pick it for book club, I'd recommend doing some background research on the author. That throws a whole new dimension to the discussion of the novel.
